Directors

Jim Kilgus

Jim Kilgus serves as Co-Director of Bands at Mauldin Middle School.  Ensembles include Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Bands, and Wind Ensemble.  Bands under his direction have received over 50 Superior ratings at the SCBDA Concert Performance Assessment, Carowinds Festival of Music, Heritage Festivals, and Festival Disney.  In 2012, the Mauldin Middle School Wind Ensemble was featured at the South Carolina Music Educators Association Conference. 

Mr. Kilgus has been a band director in Greenville County since 1991 and at Mauldin Middle School since 2004.  In addition to his school duties, Mr. Kilgus has been a conductor with the Carolina Youth Symphony since 1991. 

Mr. Kilgus received a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Furman University and a Master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in Conducting and Music Education. A sought-after judge, clinician, and speaker, Mr. Kilgus has a highly respected reputation for exceptional teaching and advocacy of music education. His professional affiliations include Phi Beta Mu, the National Bandmaster’s Fraternity, the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), and the South Carolina Band Directors Association (SCBDA). Mr. Kilgus is also the recipient of the National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence for “outstanding contributions to bands and band music.”


Julie Poston

Julie Poston has served as Co-Director of Bands at Mauldin Middle School since 2006. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Furman University in 2004 and her Master's degree in Music Education from the University of South Carolina in 2006. She also holds a Master's in Learning and Technology from Western Governor's University. 

Ms. Poston is a member of the South Carolina Band Director’s Association, the National Association for Music Education, and Sigma Alpha Iota. She is a National Board Certified teacher and is a recipient of the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association. 

Ensembles include Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Bands, and Wind Ensemble. Bands under her direction have received Excellent and Superior ratings at the SCBDA Concert Performance Assessment, Carowinds Festival of Music, Heritage Festivals, and Festival Disney. In 2012, the Mauldin Middle School Wind Ensemble was featured at the South Carolina Music Educators Association Conference. 

In addition to her duties at Mauldin Middle, Ms. Poston serves as the Coordinator for the School District of Greenville County Honor Bands. She performs with the Poinsett Wind Symphony and teaches clarinet privately. 

Ms. Poston lives in Greer with her daughter Caroline.
